In late November 2024, Zagreb became a hub of creativity and learning as the Centre for Cultural Activities (CKD) and Otvorena Medijska Grupacija (OMG) hosted an engaging five-day filmmaking workshop. This event brought together young enthusiasts eager to delve into the art of filmmaking, offering a comprehensive introduction to the process and fostering a collaborative environment.
The program commenced on November 27th with participants arriving and settling into the Himalayan Hostel, conveniently located near CKD’s office. The evening featured an introductory session where attendees got acquainted, shared their expectations, and received an overview of the schedule.
The following day, November 28th, was dedicated to unraveling the complexities of filmmaking. Sessions covered the stages of pre-production, production, and post-production, highlighting the essential roles and equipment involved. Participants gained insights into the meticulous planning and coordination required to bring a film from concept to screen.
On November 29th, the focus shifted to developing a critical eye for film. Workshops emphasized viewing videos with a professional perspective, enabling participants to appreciate the nuances of filmmaking techniques and storytelling. Later that day, a guided tour of Zagreb allowed attendees to explore the city’s rich cultural landscape, enhancing their creative inspiration.
November 30th provided a platform for reflection and innovation. The morning session reviewed previous projects from the Filmmaking Lab, offering valuable case studies and lessons learned. In the afternoon, participants brainstormed suggestions for improvement and discussed potential collaborative projects, fostering a spirit of teamwork and forward-thinking.
The workshop concluded on December 1st with an evaluation session, where feedback was exchanged, and the overall experience was assessed. Participants expressed a sense of accomplishment and appreciation for the knowledge gained and connections made. Departures followed, with many leaving inspired to pursue further endeavors in filmmaking.
Throughout the workshop, CKD and OMG ensured a supportive environment, providing resources and guidance to nurture the participants’ creative growth. The event not only imparted technical skills but also emphasized the importance of cultural expression and the role of media in society.
This initiative reflects CKD’s mission to promote human rights, cultural values, and democracy through educational programs and artistic engagement. Similarly, OMG’s dedication to utilizing media for societal betterment was evident, as they facilitated discussions on the impact of film and media on public awareness and advocacy.
The success of this filmmaking workshop underscores the vital role of cultural organizations in empowering individuals and fostering community through the arts. Participants departed with a deeper understanding of filmmaking and a renewed enthusiasm to contribute to the cultural tapestry of their communities.
